It’s tough to grow a business. If we’re good at what we do, sooner or later, we’re going to be overwhelmed. We’ll be faced with more work than we can handle. Not only will we be doing the actual inspections, the thing we do for a living, but we’ll also be be dealing with all the other tasks that come along with running a successful small business.

We imagine that if we could just get someone to take over the part of our job that aggravates us the most (like marketing, accounting, answering phones, scheduling, etc.), then we could concentrate on making money!
The problem is that we’re not going to want to hire just anyone; we’re going to be looking for the perfect employee. We’d want someone who cares as much as we do, is really good at their job, and is heavily invested in the success of our business.
And why wouldn’t we?
Unfortunate reality check: That’s probably not going to happen.
If such a person really existed, don’t you think that they would already have a great job? They wouldn’t be sitting at home on the couch, hoping that a small business owner with a startup company would call and offer them an entry level position.
It’s much more likely that if we do end up hiring someone, they’re probably going to be a lot like us: someone who’s looking to grow their skillset so they can move up the ladder. They’re not going to be a polished, finished project; they’re going to be like a piece of furniture from Ikea: some assembly required.

It’s entirely possible that we’ll be able to find someone to help us get to where we want to go, but it’s not going to be a plug-and-play type of thing. New employees almost always need training and experience. We didn’t get to where we are today by simply snapping our fingers; it took a good bit of time, education, and experience.
As long as we understand what’s necessary to mold a new-hire into a reliable employee, we can make it work.
We just need to plan accordingly.
There are only two types of employees: those who excel at their job and eventually leave for greener pastures, and those you wish would.
