Remarkably Average

We all want to be as successful as we can be. We don’t have to be too smart to figure that out. We do, however, need to have some common sense to be able to realize that level of success: the most successful that we can be. It takes a certain level of commitment on our part, an ability and willingness to put in the extra work that it takes to achieve those goals.

the hard work of becoming a better home inspector

Unfortunately, most inspectors are not willing to go the extra mile to provide their clients with a product that’s remarkable. Most inspectors do what they have to do to keep everything going. They’ll do the minimum number of continuing education hours they need to keep their license. They carry the minimum amount of insurance they’re required to carry. They buy the cheapest software they can in order to produce a report. They spend as little as possible on inspection tools, hiding behind the fact that we aren’t required to use more than a few rudimentary items on inspections.

They try as hard as they possibly can to be exactly what almost all the other inspectors are: average.

It takes a lot of time and energy to be more than an average home inspector. It takes a willingness to do research when we could be watching TV. It takes a certain level of dedication to our craft to work behind the scenes, getting better when we could be doing something else. It takes commitment to go beyond what’s required, to surpass expectations, to provide the client with an experience that truly is remarkable.

The thing is that most people aren’t willing to go there, which makes inspectors that are rare, notable, and (ultimately) valuable.

Be remarkable

The word remarkable literally means worthy of being noticed and talked about.

I we truly want to be an inspector that’s worthy of being talked about, then we’ve got to be willing to do the things that other inspectors aren’t willing to do. We’ve got to take more classes than they do. We’ve got to read more books and study more subjects than they do. We’ve got to make sure our software and templates are better than theirs. We’ve got to make sure our processes are easier for the agents than their clunky system. We’ve got to make sure that the experience of working with us is head and shoulders above what they’re doing.

If we want to be one of the best, then we can’t just be the best inspector. We’ve got to be the best researcher. We’ve got to be the best student. We’ve got to be the best teacher. We’ve got to be the best marketer, communicator, and source of information.

the best home inspector ever

Home inspection clients that want to hire a remarkable inspector are willing to pay more to get a higher level of service. If we want to reap the benefits that come with being remarkable in service of our clients (i.e., better inspections, better clients, and better income), then we’ve got to be willing to invest more as well.

Being remarkable is a great business strategy, because most of our competition isn’t willing to put in the extra work that it takes to get there.

Will we be remarkable, or will we be like everyone else: average?
