Figuring out who’s the strongest man in the world is a pretty simple thing to do. We gather together all the world’s strong men, ask them to lift some heavy barbells, and see who lifts the most weight. It’s a pretty straightforward thing to measure.
Figuring out who’s the best _________ (insert your career here) is a much more difficult lift. (See what I did there?)
There is no practical measurement for competence in most industries; it’s clear to see that in most professions, the “rankings” are much more arbitrary.
Just because we’ve stuffed our brain with every fact and figure needed to have all the answers at hand doesn’t necessarily translate into success.
We’d be much better served trying to figure out what it is our customers are looking for and spending our time developing better methods of delivering what it is they’re trying to find.
