A Stop on the Road

We all want to be good at whatever it is that we do, but the sad fact, the harsh reality, the underlying truth that none of us wants to hear is that we really can’t be good unless first, we’re bad.

All of us begin our careers with very limited skills. We have to start out as a bad inspector, a bad photographer, a bad agent, or a bad nurse before we can be a good one.

We have to show up day after day, time after time, again and again, putting in the work. We have to start at the bottom, practicing our craft, getting a little bit better each time we put ourselves out there. Then, one day, we suddenly realize that we’re really not so bad anymore.

The old adage that practice makes perfect still holds true. But we can’t be afraid of being bad, as it’s simply a stop on the road to becoming good.
