Holding Back

We like to think that the arc of progress in our careers is linear: we start at the bottom and gradually work our way up; that our graph moves steadily up and to the right.

But it’s really not that simple.

While growth quite often happens in a predictable fashion, sometimes it doesn’t. We can get stuck in a rut for a long time, not regressing but not really moving forward.

And oftentimes, that’s OK. Some people are happy once they plateau. They’ve gotten to where they want to be, and they’re happy to stay there.

If we want to keep growing, however, we’ve got to figure out how to get past the obstacles in our path, and the first part of that journey is to identify what it is that’s holding us back.

Holding back never gets us anywhere except where we’ve already been. It takes courage to move forward.

What are we waiting for?
