Every Inspection Is an Audition

Think about it: Every home inspection we do is much more than one single job. Every inspection is an opportunity to earn our next one. Every interaction shapes how our clients see us and influences how they will remember us long after we’ve left the property. The people watching us today may become tomorrow’s customers, referral sources, or business partners. The inspectors who understand this important fact don’t treat inspections as isolated transactions; they work hard to make every one a performance worth remembering.

home inspector, on stage

I am lucky enough to be able to do home inspections as well as operate a school educating inspectors (and future inspectors). I have a vested interest in doing a stellar job when I am training home inspectors. Obviously, doing so makes our industry better as a whole, as poor inspectors reflect badly on all of us, but those new inspectors will need continuing education once they get their license. If I make a great impression on them during training, I am all but guaranteed that they will look to me in the future for their continuing education hours. Furthermore, when their businesses get large enough, it’s likely that they will send their new employees to me for training. So, it is in my best interest to impress them during their home inspection training class while preparing them for the realities of the industry..

The same principle can be applied to our home inspection business. Without a doubt, it is in our best interest to amaze the people that are present during the inspection. Our clients are likely to have friends and relatives who are also in the market for a new home and therefore, will soon need the services of an inspector. Impressing our clients is one of the best ways to ensure they will recommend us when the time comes (giving us another chance to wow more people).

getting great home inspection reviews

Equally, if not more important, is the opportunity we have to impress the other individuals involved in the real estate transaction. The chances are high that both agents involved in the sale are going to see our inspection report. If we provide a quality product, something with all the necessary inspection information (but also easy to use), the odds are quite high that we’ll end up on their short list of inspectors to call the next time they’re selling a house.

We need to remember that we’re on stage every time we “perform” an inspection. We should do everything in our power to exceed the expectations of everyone involved. If we do, we’re all but assured that the cycle of performances will continue.
