Audience

It’s hard not to get sucked into all the knowledge that we accumulate as a professional home inspector. We learn so much stuff, about so many different things, that we’re often able to pick out the smallest deficiency in the middle of the biggest, most complicated picture.

But even more impressive than our amazing powers of deduction is our ability to relate to our audience.

We’ve got to remember that everyone comes into this process from a different place. Everyone has their own thoughts, experiences, preconceived notions, and biases.

No one else is looking at things the way we are, and if we don’t remember to “play to our audience,” we might as well be speaking to the wall.

It’s great to have all that knowledge. But try to show off and talk over the heads of our clients too much, and maybe instead of talking to the wall we’ll be talking to the judge.
